What Is Keyword Density and Why It Still Matters for SEO

Keyword density is the percentage of times a specific word or phrase appears relative to the total word count of a page. Search engines no longer reward high density the way they did in the early 2010s, but it still matters as a sanity check.

Too low, and relevance is unclear

If your target keyword appears once in a 2,000-word article, it may be hard for both readers and search engines to tell what the page is actually about.

Too high, and it reads as spam

Repeating the same phrase every other sentence — "keyword stuffing" — hurts readability and can trigger spam filters. There's no universal "correct" percentage, but most natural writing lands well under 2-3% density for any single phrase.

Use it as a check, not a target

Write naturally first, then check keyword density afterward. If your main topic doesn't show up at all in the top results, that's a signal to revise — not a reason to force it in artificially.
